Background Checks (or background investigations) are often requested by employers for of job candidate preemployment screening. Results of background checks typically include past employment verification, credit score, and criminal history or criminal background checks.

These background checks are often used by employers as a means of objectively evaluating a job candidate's qualifications and to identify potential hiring risks through preemployment screening.

Employment Screening

Employment screening (or preemployment screening) refers to the process of investigating the backgrounds of potential employees and is commonly used to verify the accuracy of an applicant's claims as well as to discover any possible criminal history, workers compensation claims, or employer sanctions.

Preemployment screening

There are a variety of types of investigative searches that are available to potential employers. It is important to be selective about which preemployment screening agency you use. A legitimate preemployment screening company like TMAP-Backgrounds will be happy to explain the process to you.

Many employers choose to search the most common records such as criminal records, driving records, and education verification & employment verification for their preemployment screening. It is common for companies to verify references as part of a verification background check.

Other searches such as sex offender registry, credential verification, skills assessment, reference checks, credit reports and Patriot Act searches are becoming increasingly common. It is wise to consider the position in question when determining which types of searches or background screening to include in preemployment screening. They should always use the same searches for every applicant being considered for one position.

Types of employment screening (or preemployment screening) background checks

Criminal Background Checks

Several types of criminal record searches are available. Some are more accurate and up to date than others. Some background screening companies search public information databases. Other database-type criminal searches are available, such as statewide repositories and the national crime file.

Driving and vehicle records

Employers that routinely hire drivers or are in the transportation sector seek drivers with clean driving records (i.e., those without a history of accidents or traffic tickets). Department of Motor Vehicles and Department of Transportation records are searched to determine a qualified driver as part of the pre-employment screening process.

Drug Test/Alchohol Test

Drug tests are used for a variety of reasons-corporate ethics, measuring potential employee performance, and keeping workers' compensation premiums down.

Verify Education Records

These are used primarily to see if the potential employee had graduated from high school (or a GED) or received an college degree, graduate degree, or some other accredited university degree. There are reports of SAT scores being requested by employers as well.

Verify Employment Records

These usually range from simple verbal confirmations of past employment and timeframe to deeper, such as discussions about performance, activities and accomplishments, and relations with others.

Verify Financial Information

Credit scores, liens, civil judgments, or bankruptcy may be included in the report.

Verify Licensing Records

A government authority that has some oversight over professional conduct of its licensees will also maintain records regarding the licensee, such as personal information, education, complaints, investigations, and disciplinary actions.

Military Service Verification

Although not as common today as it was in the past fifty years, employers frequently requested the specifics of one's military discharge.

Social Security Number Verification

Use of a fraudulent Social Security Number or SSN usualy indicates identity theft, lack of citizenship, or concealment prior criminal activity. A Social Security trace to determine where the applicant or employee has lived is commonly provided as a result of background screening.

Verify References

Companies should perform an employment background check to verify references, position and salary information. Past employment and reference verifications are becoming standardized in most companies to avoid litigation.

Workplace Violence

Workplace Violence

Violence at work (or workplace violence) can be defined as incidents where people are threatened, abused or assaulted in circumstances relating to their work. It may involve an explicit or implicit challenge to their safety, health or well-being.

Almost dayly there is another story of violence at work in the media. It may be a convenience store shooting, a sexual assault in a company parking lot, or a disgruntled employee holding workers hostage.

Incidents of workplace violence that apear in the media are only the tip of the iceberg. What all its victims have in common is that they were at work, earning a living, but something about their work environment-often somethingmpreventable-made them the victim of attack by a co-worker, customer, or even a complete stranger.

Two million American workers fall victim to workplace violence each year. The estimated costs of workplace violence to employers runs in the billions of dollars while research into the prevention of violence in the workplace is still in its infancy.

Workplace violence can be any act of physical violence, threats of physical violence, harassment, intimidation, or other threatening, disruptive behavior that occurs at the work site. Workplace violence can affect or involve employees, visitors, and contractors. It can come in the form of non-physical violence (threats, intimidation, or abuse), physical violence (e.g. pushing, kicking, or punching), or aggravated physical violence (e.g. knives, guns, or other weapons).

Several different actions can be responsible for workplace violence. It may even be the result of situations which are not work related. Workplace violence can be inflicted by an employee, supervisor, co-worker, manager, customer, family member, or even a stranger. Workplace violence is not to be accepted or tolerated no matter the cause or perpetrator, .

Workplace Violence Prevention

After performing preemployment screening (or post employment screening) the most important and least costly part of any companies workplace violence prevention activities is a sound violence prevention plan. Your agency should have the following in place to help prevent workplace violence:

Preemployment Screening

Companies should create a coherent violence prevention plan which consistent with laws and regulations and includes the pre-employment screening techniques which are to be utilized, such as interview questions, background and reference checks, and drug testing/alchohol testing as appropriate for the position under consideration.

Security

Maintaining a safe work place should be part of any prevention program. Security guard services, id badges with employee photos and individual coded key cards for access to facilities can all help prevent violence in the workplace. At times, such as durring downsizing or plant closures, it may be necesary to employ bodyguards or executive protection professionals.

Dispute Resolution

Dispute resolution can be effective in resolving disputes when a conflict has been identified early. If you have identified a potential conflict call TMAP-backgrounds imeadiately to speak with one of our dispute resolution specialists.

Threat Assessment Team

An interdisciplinary threat assesment team will work with management to assess the potential for workplace violence and develop and execute a plan to mitigate it.

Violence in all its forms is a concern for staff and management alike. For employers, violence can lead to poor morale and a poor image for the organization, making it difficult to recruit and keep staff. It can also mean extra costs, such as those associated with absenteeism, higher insurance premiums and legal fees, fines and compensation payments where negligence is proven.
